notes 4/7/14

An American citizen is a person that swears allegiance to the U.S. before the 1860's citizenship was not important to people. The 14th amendemnet (passed in1868) was the first constitutional definition. "all people born or naturalized in the U.S. are in the judcial system
         1.) born in the U.S.
2.) naturalized.   90% of Americans are citizens by birth.

naturalization is a legal process by which a person can become a ctiizen of another country at some time after birth. congress has an exclusive power to privide for naturlization.

naturalization is normally done individually.
collective natralization is when an entire group is granted citizenship through en masse(they become a citizen because the U.S. gains their territory.)

You can abdon your citizenship through expatriation.

It is unconstitutional for congress to take away citizenship no matter what. naturalized citizens can only loose citizenship if they beame a citizen illgally or choose to not be one anymore. denaturlazation only occurs by a court order and only after it has been shown that the person became an american citizen through fraud or deception.

Marrige does not make you a U.S. citizen, it just shortens  the process.

congress has exclusive power to regulate the crossing of this natios borders, inwards and outwords. There is a limit
                                 Immigration act of 1965
Immigration act of 1990:
governs the admission of aleins into the U.S. the act now allows 650,000 people into the U.S.

-some arnt allowed in the U.S. because of criminal, mentally ill who might be a harm, ect.
-deportation, a legal process by which aleins are required to leave the country.
-biggest reasons for deprevation: illgal imigrent conviction of a serious crime.

BR: 4/6/14

I got a 72% on my test.

notes: 4/6/14

people wont think to treat others different just cause the federal government says they should. you can't change morality by passing a law. the law can restrain you from acting a certain way.

1870's-1950's no law was passed in regards to civil rights. The Civil Rights Act of 1964
changed public services, voting provisions, federal funding programs, employers and labor unions could not discriminate. could not discriminate against race, ethnicity, gender or religion.
Civil Rights Act of 1968"open housing act."
cannot refuse selling rent living space to a person due to race, religion, national origin, disability, ect. housing is still one of the most segregated areas in American life today.
Title 9: forbids discrimination on the basis of gender in any educational program or regarding financial assistance. equal funding required.
Affirmative Action: requires employers to not discriminate, be positive. employers must meet quotes for minority groups/genders.

Many argue in reverse discrimination against the minority group. they are denied oppertunities so minority groups have more opportunities. "color blind" -base them off skills, not looks.
Cali, mi, wash, &Nebraska voters passed measures to eliminate all affirmative action plans.

The Bakke Case: Allan Bakke sued the University of California because he was denied access to their medical school due to Affirmative action 16/100 seats were reserved for minority students. Bakke won the case.
Since then the court has made decisions regarding similar cases.

Justice Sandra Day O'Connor predicts in 25 years, the use of racial preferences will no longer be necessary.

discriminatory picture 4/2/14

1.) The persons face reflects that he is mad or upset, like it's not fair to him.

2.) If this happened today, it would be like an African American man applying for a job and getting turned down because of the color of his skin.

3.) In the picture, a black man is looking at a sign for a job that says "help wanted, whites only."

4.) In America at the time, there was still segregation.

BR:4/2/14

The most difficult part of the discrimination project is being African American because we cannot talk or do anything without permission.

2/11/14

My provisions for this Bill is that I would like to help legalize marijuana in the state of Nevada because it would help many citizens with painful medical conditions that cannot get medical marijuana and would also help get rid of the over-populated black market for it. I would help fund it by using jars and signs and the marijuana medical field.
